Sulphur is an essential nutrient required for protein formation and a number of enzyme reactions within plant cells which are required for satisfactory crop growth.

Sulphur is an essential component of the amino acid cysteine and methionine and is required for a number of important enzyme reactions controlling metabolic and growth processes within plant cells. S deposition has decreased in the UK over the last few decades. Sulphate, the form of sulphur taken up by crops, is soluble in water just like nitrate and is therefore easily leached.  In cereal crops, S deficiency results in crop stunting, leaf narrowing and reduced grain yield. Deficiency is more pronounced at high N rates and is characterised by wide N:S ratios (>17:1) in both young leaf tissue and grain. In Oilseed Rape, deficiencies can often be seen as a whitening of new flowers. Lighter soils in areas of high rainfall with low atmospheric depositions are especially susceptible to sulphur deficiency due to leaching.

Plants need around 12 essential mineral nutrients to grow: Nitrogen (N), Phosphorous (P), Potassium (K), Magnesium (Mg), Sulphur (S), Calcium (Ca), Iron (Fe), Manganese (Mn), Zinc (Zn), Copper (Cu), Boron (B) and Molybdenum (Mo).

Analysing grain for all 12 nutrients can be an effective tool to improve nutrient management, providing information on crop nutrient status and nutrient offtakes.  It can indicate whether your crops are getting hold of the nutrients they need, or whether you can save on future fertiliser use.
