ADAS Digital Decision Support encompasses the way in which we use digital data and digital technology to deliver solutions in crop production, sustainable food and farming, land management and ecology to our clients.

By applying digital technology to challenges in the environmental, agricultural and rural sectors, we deliver cost-effective, state-of-the-art solutions in strategic and policy advice, research and development.

Improving the efficiency of data capture and streamlining processes - ADAS provides the hardware, software and expertise for the digital capture of field data via sensors, drones and satellites, enabling measurements and observations to be recorded efficiently and accurately.

Maximising the value of data to give scientific credibility - ADAS provides a range of digital data management options to suit the complexity and nature of the data and the needs of our clients. Our understanding of the data enables us to perform robust analyses and manipulations using statistical software and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Developing models to provide intelligence - ADAS has been producing environmental data, models and decision support tools for over 30 years. We use models and tools to maximise the value of data to our clients and to improve current or future management decisions.

Producing tools that apply intelligence to real world scenarios - ADAS develop bespoke software tools for operational management, policy implementation and knowledge exchange. Our programmers specialise in developing mapping and reporting tools, standalone desktop decision support systems, web-based mapping and data management applications, and survey software.

Agriculture now generates vast amounts of data of different types and at different scales. The ownership, access, control, sharing, value, permissioning, intergration, security, safeguarding and sovereignty of this data represent multiple challenges and opportunities for the sector.

ADAS has the largest group of crop physiologists in the UK The ADAS crop physiology team focuses on improving performance and sustainability of cropping systems for food, feed and biofuel production.

Agronomics is the science of understanding the variation in the cropped environment, identifying the management practices and system designs that work. It uses a farm centric approach of shared farm data and on-farm experimentation.

ADAS are planning a Nutrition Challenge to compare the effect of different nutrition programmes on winter feed wheat yield, N uptake and gross margin, in the 2022/23 season. This is particularly timely following the recent dramatic rise in nitrogen fertiliser prices, which has forced the industry to re-examine nutrition strategies. Objectives of the project are to showcase good nutrition products and practices so that farmers are equipped and encouraged to use fertiliser better, for the benefit of the environment and their own gross margins.

ADAS scientists help evidence and guide crop disease management by chemical, genetic and biological approaches. Our expertise covers all areas of disease management on the major crops. We lead multi-organisation collaborative research into disease management and preventation, as well as provide strategic consultancy.  

The ADAS Climate and Sustainability team help clients to address their sustainability challenges.

A range of digital technologies promise to transform agriculture, including sensing, robotics, artificial intelligence, wireless networks & IoT, big data, decision support tools, modelling, digital twins and precision farming. 

Crop profitability depends on maximising margins, rather than yield alone. Deciding on the optimum crop protection strategy in the spring requires judgement of the variety, its situation, and how yield affecting diseases can be controlled. ADAS with the support of the AHDB and the wider industry set up the first Fungicide Margin challenge in 2019. Since then a total of 10 trials have been carried out over 3 years, allowing entrants to pit innovative strategies against others, against an ADAS experts' programme and against an untreated crop in replicated plot trials. The aim being to achieve the highest margin over fungicide cost.   

ADAS Farming Association membership provides independent strategic technical support to help you improve farm productivity. We put current research into perspective and offer clear guidance on forthcoming agronomy decisions for our members. We also cover non-agronomy topics such as biofuels, waste regulations etc. Conferences and meetings will cover various topics and can be attended by any member. All of our events and publications will be allocated the appropriate BASIS and NRoSo points.
