How useful is SMN really in judging SNS and setting N rates for arable crops?
Our experience at Morley shows there isn't much of a relationship between measured SMN and measured N optima. We also question whether SMN is used by the crop with 100% efficiency.

We examined this in the AHDB LearN and SNS Best Practice projects. There is always lots of variability in any relationship with nitrogen, but we find that SNS is the major driver of variation in N optima, and, whilst not perfect, SMN is one of the few measures we have to estimate SNS.
