Skippy Scout - Getting the best from Spring N applications

Here at Drone Ag, we are conscious that weather conditions and crop development impact the optimal amount of Nitrogen (N) required in Spring, year on year, N application being the main determinant of OSR canopy size and structure.

In Spring the correct N rate helps:

  • Promote crop growth and development
  • Ensure balanced crop nutrition
  • Optimise fertiliser costs
  • Improve overall harvest quality
  • Increase yield

Skippy Scout OSR N Recommendations

Skippy Scout reporting provides better ground-truthing and more accurate GAI results when compared with other systems. Unlike satellite imagery our GAI is crop only, by discounting weeds our reporting provides more accurate N recommendations.

Skippy makes this information quickly, easily and affordably accessible, with reports being sent directly to your phone in minutes.

Reports produced by Skippy Scout also enable you to closely monitor crop performance with leaf-level crop data collection and analysis.

Scout point image taken from a report showing N recommendations and detailed imagery.

The reports have been tried and tested by pro agronomists to help guide N application by:

  • Providing close-up imagery
  • Indicating if variable rates are needed
  • Producing crop only Green Area Index readings (GAI - the ratio of green plant material relative to a square meter of soil. Skippy's GAI reading is crop only, meaning that unlike satellite data, it can discount any weeds, providing a better understanding of the amount of N etc. required as a result.)
  • Recommending a base N rate per field avg & per scout point in reports during leaf/stem development
  • Providing unhealthy leaf detection & measurement (Skippy measures purple and yellow leaf detection to monitor for deficiency, see below why this is important.)

When analysing your OSR report produced by Skippy Scout, it is important to bear in mind the characteristics of Nitrogen deficiency:

  • Reduced vigour
  • Smaller leaves
  • Pale green or yellowish leaf colour, potential purple discolouration on mature leaves
  • Growth is restricted and stand looks more loose than normal
  • Reduced flowering

Skippy Scout can save you time, money and fertiliser. All you need to get going is a compatible drone and your phone.
