The perfect walking companion and her pet apple! Michelle, my Romanian street dog

The lunchtime stroll

I sit at my desk all day, like so many other people. Whether I am working in the office or if I am working from home, I have a very sedentary role. It's the one thing I dislike about my brilliant job.

So, I make sure I get out for a walk at lunchtime, I also don't have a choice about this because I have a dog and she needs her walk but even if I didn't have Michelle (my dog) I would still go out. While my walks might not be a killer workout, it's nothing like my circuits class or my weight training sessions but the benefits are huge.

  • It's time away from my screens
  • It's free!
  • It's not time-consuming
  • It clears my head
  • It gives my eyes a break
  • It gives my brain a break
  • It strengthens my heart
  • It boosts my energy for the afternoon
  • It strengthens my bones
  • It makes me sleep better
  • It improves my creativity
  • It makes me genuinely happy!

Are you seeing a theme here?

Most people take their health for granted, and without our health, we have nothing. So why not do one thing that is guaranteed to improve your health and get out and walk during your lunch break? There will be occasions when it just isn't possible, and life and a busy workload get in the way, but can you honestly say to yourself that you can't spare even 20 minutes to get out in the fresh air?

Try it for a week and see how much better you feel, the dog is optional, but your health isn't.
