This weeks highlights (19 February 2022)

A comparative assessment of the nutritional composition of dairy and plant-based dairy alternatives available for sale in the UK and the implications for consumers’ dietary intakes
ScienceDirect (2022): Plant-based dairy alternatives (PBDA) cost three times more than dairy products. There were significant differences between milk, yogurt and cheese and PBDA for many nutrients. PBDA can have significant consequences for nutrient intakes when replaced with dairy. Fortification provides a potential route for improving the nutritional composition of PBDA. At present, PBDA can be considered a practical but not nutritional replacement for dairy products.

Regenerative kit – One system, many uses
CPM Magazine (2022): Regenerative agriculture isn’t far from many lips of late, but really knowing what’s the best pieces of kit can be a minefield. CPM attended a CHAP webinar where experts discussed some of the top tools to use in a regenerative system.

Call for agri-tech industry to create meaningful metrics for ELMS
Agri-TechE (2022): Concern over the need to show ‘additionality’ to gain incentives is holding farmers back

Exploring how social capital and learning are related to the resilience of Dutch arable farmers
ScienceDirect (2022): We study the robustness, adaptability, and transformability of arable farms using a qualitative and quantitative methods. Social capital helps farmers to learn, enabling them to obtain more complete information and potentially enhance resilience. Different combinations of bonding, bridging, and linking social capital relate to robustness, adaptation, and transformation.

Milking the environmental benefits of private investment
SRUC (2022): A £1.5 million project led by SRUC has found private investment in ecosystem services has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from dairy farms. The Resilient Dairy Landscapes project, funded by the Global Food Security programme, explored the trade-offs between farmers’ livelihoods, the natural environment and a stable supply of reasonably priced dairy products.
