Clover trial field map

As part of the AICC Crop Nutrition Club 2023, this on-farm winter wheat trial tested the benefits of clover living mulches in winter wheat. The trial was facilitated by a local AICC advisor, with support and Agronomics yield map analysis from ADAS.

Results summary: The trial found negligible yield impacts from the addition of clover relative to the control. Similarly, there were no discernable differences between the control treatment and the clover treatment in grain N levels.

Reduced N treatments within the clover reduced yield by 0.17 t/ha and 0.24 t/ha, for 10% and 20% reductions in N rate respectively, this lost yield was probably worth slightly less than the cost saving, so within the clover treatments, gross margin was probably highest for the lowest N rate. There was however a notable reduction in grain N at the lowest N rate.

It seems clear that there was no yield benefit within this crop sufficient to justify the expense of establishing the clover, although there could plausibly be benefits to soil structure, organic matter or N supply which would only be apparent in following crops.
