Lupin is currently an under-utilised crop in the UK with a huge potential to transform the protein market for both food and feed. We are investigating how lupin could become a sustainably produced farm-based protein crop in the UK, to replace and overcome the need for importing soya for livestock feed.
There is a need to both gain greater understanding of sustainable lupin production methods in the UK and investigate trait improvement to enable lupin to become a viable competitor in the protein production market. Our project is exploring this through two innovative areas of research. Firstly, we are investigating the decarbonisation strategies possible for use in lupin production, principally around regenerative agriculture methodologies (for combinable and forage crop). Secondly, we are investigating the potential of trait improvement in lupin using gene-editing.
