Regenerative farming looks to optimise the use of the ecological system and environment, in order to benefit from the natural ecosystem services that they provide.

The five key principles of regenerative agriculture are:

  1. Minimise soil disturbance - adopting reduced or zero tillage practices
  2. Keep soil covered - minimising the amount of time that the soil is left bare, especially in winter, by covering with cover crops and leys
  3. Maintain living roots, which help stabilise the soil, prevent nutrient run-off and actively input carbon into the soil.
  4. Diversify rotations - Include leys and diversify crops grown
  5. Integrate livestock. Livestock can eat the grass grown to cover soil between arable rotations, and their manure can add valuable nutrients into the soil, reducing the need for fertilisers. 

Minimise soil disturbance

  • The adoption of less intensive tillage practices, such as zero tillage, reduced tillage and conservation tillage, are less damaging to soil structure than conventional tillage (ploughing and harrowing)
  • Enhances soil biology (e.g. numbers and diversity of earthworms)
  • Increases surface organic matter levels, important for establishing a seed bed and crops

Keeping the soil covered and maintaining living roots

  • Provide over-winter cover, minimising soil erosion, weeds and nitrate leaching
  • Increase N retention, providing nutrients to the next crop
  • Provide benefits for soil structure, water holding capacity and enhanced porosity
  • Enhances earthworm numbers

Diversifying the rotation and introducing grass and livestock

  • Introducing leys (short-term grassland into rotation)
  • These leys can be used for grazing animals - returning of litter and manures to the soils to enhance soil organic matter
  • Enhancing the diversity of rotations and grass swards provides a variety of rooting structures for healthier soils with better hydrological and nutrient functioning.
  • Enhanced plant diversity is beneficial to wildlife, pollinators
  • Diversifying crop rotations helps prevent the build-up of certain weeds and pathogens

Mob grazing is a form of intensive managed grazing where large numbers of animals graze a small area of land for a short period of time. There is increasing interest in this system due to perceived productivity and environmental benefits. However, there is very limited research to quantify the impact of mob grazing systems, and many farmers adopting the system have been influenced by anecdotal evidence from other farmers.

In 2021 Defra commissioned an ADAS led consortium to look at the environmental and productivity benefits of mob grazing systems in the UK. 

Some symbiotic or free-living microorganisms can fix inert di-nitrogen (N) from the air into reactive organic nitrogenous compounds.  Most biological N fixation (BNF) in farming systems occurs in the root nodules of legumes where rhizobium bacteria take photosynthates from the plant in exchange for fixing atmospheric N and returning ammonium or amides which the plant uses to form amino acids, proteins, etc.   Plants need more N than any other nutrient and N commonly limits plant growth in many ecosystems.

The attention placed on soil health in agriculture has been receiving more and more attention in recent years primarily due to our improved understanding of the interactions between soil health and overall crop performance in both arable and horticultural systems. This has led to increased soil monitoring and analysis as well as the adoption of alternative farming methods such as cover-cropping and min-till plowing to improve overall soil longevity. However, this increased adoption of more sustainable practices is heavily restricted to organic systems as conventional farming continues to be heavily reliant on high-input chemical fertilizers. Thus the presence of native Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi, (AMF) has been steadily decreasing in soils for decades which has only increased our reliance on these high-input chemical systems, further locking us into a business-as-usual model going forwards. As yield loss from pest pressure and disease susceptibility continue to threaten global food security, costing an estimated $300 billion a year, the race to find the best long-term solutions that pragmatically improve whole system resilience to biotic and abiotic factors is in our midst. Could AMF be part of the solution going, forwards? Here is what we know so far and some recent breakthroughs in the science surrounding it.
